Three steps later, I hear an explosive snap, turn to see a tree fall exactly where I was standing ten seconds ago, crushing the fence, the gate, the pump. Adrenaline surges. Gasp for breath, as my heart rate soars. Big tree, a hundred and twenty feet, fallen across the pond and into the yard above, the steps and the back fence crushed. I walk over to look at the gate leading to the main house. The tree blocks the exit. Trapped in a forest around the pond. Wind drowns the sound of my heart. Our tiny house borders on the forest behind the main house. If more trees fall, it will be here. I give a plaintive howl into the wind.
