In Ms. Elvin’s deft hands, the use of this artifice resulted in a highly entertaining book. But don’t be a too comfortable reading it. There’s a hook. This is an ironic account of the 120 years, the uncharming view of our racist history juxtaposed by the utterly charming “memory guardians” and occupants of the house. No one in 120 years in the house on Stone Street was anything other than the best kind of people humanity can offer. Folks who lived without guile, and without hate without corrupt natures. They weren’t spoiled, entitled. They were the salt and of the earth who sweated and struggled and still had kindness to give. Their memories were worth guarding.
