About
Prolific Tennessean author Shawn Callaway Hays materializes his passion to assist his communities as a life safety educator and as an officer in emergency and rescue services. Shawn Callaway Hays lives in the Ooltewah suburb of Chattanooga with his wife, Laura, and two children, Ivy and Callaway. Follow Shawn Callaway Hays and his similar works at SpeakLowPoetry.
In "Grass That Leaves Greener," Hays’s poetry is a praise to the process of dialectical progress, exploring the escapisms—the “eschatons and egresses”—of the human condition through his narratively developmental themes of existentialism, mythology, theology, hermeneutics, epic poetry, and other literary allusions. In his next cycle of poems, "aurochs maladaptive," Hays posits his personas as ebullient beasts painted on mythological caves, as “aurochs” overpowered (maladaptive), suffering brutal, chaotic, mysterious forces—some to annihilation and some to surprising escape. Alongside, Hays surprises as he delivers his spoken word, rap, and jazz lyrics. With his subsequent stage play and dialogue novel, "Closer (than you think)" and "What Light Was," Hays shifts his writing endeavors and dry humor to enticing historical fiction.
