UTC to Host Meacham Writers’ Workshop Sept. 21-23

CHATTANOOGA—The Meacham Writers’ Workshop, established in 1985 by University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Professor Emeritus and Founding Director Richard Jackson, is set to return in person for the first time since 2019.

The 2023 Meacham Writers’ Workshop will take place Sept. 21-23 at various UTC campus locations and off-campus at Stove Works (1250 E. 13th St. in Chattanooga). The program, which is free and open to the public, consists of readings, panels and workshops with the goal of creating an informal setting where well-known writers from around the country, local writers, students, novice writers and their readers can freely and equally exchange ideas, works and readings.

The three-day event is supported primarily by an endowment funded by the late Jean Meacham—a professor and assistant dean of students at UTC—in honor of her husband, Ellis K. Meacham, to promote writing as an expressive art and to bring together University and community writers and readers. The workshop’s mission is to give UTC students and underserved members of the community access to the literary arts.

“We’re excited to offer this fall’s Meacham Writer’s Workshop, which will bring a diverse group of writers and faculty to read and present at UTC and Stove Works—including Jamie Quatro, Amy Wright, Xu Xi and Meacham Fellow Jasmine Tabor, who will be leading several workshops on and off campus,” said UC Foundation Professor Sybil Baker, the Meacham Writer’s Workshop director and associate head of the UTC Department of English.

The schedule of events includes:

  • Thursday, Sept. 21: Reception and reading in the UTC Library Roth Reading Room, 5-7:30 p.m. The event is free, but registration is requested.
  • Friday, Sept. 22: Reading in the University Center Auditorium, noon-1:30 p.m.
  • Friday, Sept. 22: Reception and UTC faculty book release reading, Stoveworks, 5-7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, Sept. 23: Panels and readings, University Center Raccoon Mountain Room, noon-4 p.m.
