On Tuesday, February 7, Chattanooga Writers Guild member Grant Fetters received the Volunteer of the Year award from JTEKT, North America. Fetters was also the Guest Speaker at the awards banquet which took place at Calhoun’s Restaurant in Lenoir City and honored all JTEKT employees who had given 50 hours or more of community service over the past year. JTEKT executives presented each of the honored employees with a certificate and a cash contribution to the nonprofit or charitable organization of their choice. Grant designated the Chattanooga Writers Guild as the recipient and the Guild received a check in his honor. Grant has been active in organizing writing groups in Athens and Etowah and regularly attends our monthly Writers Guild meetings. He was recently featured in the Chattanooga Newsletter’s “Volunteer Voice.”

Maggi Vaughn, songwriter, playwright, and Poet Laureate of Tennessee spoke at the February meeting of the Chattanooga Writers Guild, one of our best attended meetings in recent years. Maggi shared stories of how she started her career, how she has published her own poetry and that of fellow poets, how she grew up listening to country music and has written lyrics sung by Loretta Lyn, Conway Twitty, and others. She encouraged each member of the audience to find their voice, and to keep writing. Her unique use of humor made her presentation both informative and enjoyable. At the end of the presentation, numerous members of the audience lined up to purchase her books, but the most common comments were, “let her keep talking,” and “bring her back sometime.”

Listen to a podcast of Maggi, interviewed by Michael Edward Miller of WUTC at this link.

Apocalypse Now and the Arts

Tuesday, November 8th

7:00 to 8 :30 PM

Downtown Public Library

Chattanooga, Tn

Free and Open to the Public

The Chattanooga Writers Guild is pleased to welcome Steve Brooks, musician and student of mythology, as presenter at their November meeting. He will show why myth of ”The Hero’s Journey” as explained by Joseph Campbell, is a classic core structure in many novels and movies. He will show scenes from the film “Apocalypse Now” to prove his point.

Everyone who is interested in seeing how the use of Greek myths can strengthen a short story or novel will be interested in Mr. Books’ presentation at the Downtown Library.

“Apocalypse Now”,. Francis Ford Coppola’s masterwork employs symbolism from the Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian religions, as well as the labyrinth and Minotaur from Greek Mythology. It is a movie of rebirth, enlightenment, and resurrection, that uses warfare as a metaphor for internal struggles.

Steve Brooks is a Nashville musician who has made the study of comparative religion and mythology a lifelong pursuit. He holds a Master’s degree from the University of Southern California, and has years of teaching experience at the college level. His article “An Apocalyptic Redemption” was recently featured in Depths InsightsE-zine. He lectured on the subject of religious and mythological symbolism found in Apocalypse Now Redux at the Chattanooga Joseph Campbell Foundation Round Table.

If you are a writer or want to write a novel, song or poem, this is a meeting that will give you valuable information how to make your story stronger and unforgettable..
