Chattanooga Writers Guild Meeting
Tuesday, July 14, 2009, 7:00 p.m.
Chattanooga-Hamilton County Bicentennial Library
This meeting is free and open to the public.
Sybil Baker spent twelve years teaching in South Korea prior to accepting a position as an assistant professor of English at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga after earning her MFA in Writing from the Vermont College of Fine Arts. During her extensive travels throughout Asia, she became increasingly interested in the allure and alienation of American travelers and expatriates, and this has heavily influenced her writing.
Ms Baker's novel, The Life Plan, just released from Casperian Books is now available online and in bookstores. Like many women, Kat Miller dreams of having a satisfying career, a loving
family, and a house of her own. But Kat has taken things further than most, documenting her dreams in a "Life Plan," so that nothing will go wrong. And the reader finds the answer Kit asks, "What would you do if your carefully planned life was falling apart?"

Listen to The Writers Show on Sunday, July 5, at 1 pm
through live internet streaming at www.wawl.org. Local author, Eleanor McCallie Cooper, discusses her biography of her relative, Grace Liu. Grace grew up in Chattanooga in the early 20th century and moved to New York to become an opera singer. Grace then fell in love with and married a Chinese engineering student and moved to China in the 1930s. She lived through the invasion of the Japanese in WWII and through the communist revolution. Grace's story provides a unique perspective as she was one of few westerners to remain in China. In addition, Ms. Cooper talks about her research in compiling the story through family letters, newspaper clippings, taped conversations, and visits to China.
