MediaBistro News for Writers
Rupe Predicts the End of Paper and Ink (Guardian) "I can see the day, maybe 20 years away, where you don't actually have paper and ink and printing presses," said Rupert Murdoch. "I think it will take a long time and I think it's a generational thing that is happening. But there's no doubt that younger people are not picking up the traditional newspapers."
Chuck Todd to Write Book about Current Administration (NYO) Chuck Todd -- the chief White House correspondent and political director for NBC News -- has sold a book proposal to editor Geoff Shandler of Little, Brown about the first few years of Barack Obama's presidency.
Probably No Hard Labor for Convicted Journos in North Korea (Washington Times) North Korea's sentencing of two American journalists to 12 years of hard labor draws attention to one of the world's most unforgiving penal systems. But North Korea expert Andrei Lankov says "They will never be sent to a real prison camp, as they would see a lot of things an outsider is not meant to see."
Broadcasters Compete to Put TV on Cellphones (LAT) The digital switch is the end of one TV era, but broadcasters and device companies hope it's opening up another. Their vision for the future: a world in which we access live television not just on big screens in our living rooms, but also on cellphones and computers and in cars.
If the Journalism Business Fails, Who Pays for Journalism? (Time/Tuned In) James Poniewozik: Let's assume newspapers fold en masse, and going online-only does not save enough money to pay people to do journalism as their chief source of income. That's gone. What replaces it? And by that, I mean, who pays for what replaces it?
